HARWICH boxer John Wheatley tasted success in his second professional fight, against tough, experienced competitor Danny Donchev.

He enjoyed a comfortable 40-36 points win in Braintree on Saturday night.

Wheatley was happy with his performance, winning every one of the four rounds, and is already looking forward to his next fight in Grays on July 1.

"Donchev was very strong and durable, but my skilful boxing and style was too much for him," said the delighted Harwich boxer.

"Under the instructions of my coach, I kept the action at long range, clipping my opponent with jabs which would have been enough to win the bout.

"I loaded up with big shots with varied amounts of success, cutting Donchev above the left eye with a straight right hand in the second round but occasionally misjudging the range and ending up too close, being held and spoiled by his unorthodox style."

Wheatley, who is coached by Russell Smith, said he was grateful for the support he received from Harwich.

"I'll continue to work hard to improve in every area of my boxing and am already looking forward to my next fight," he said.

"I'm extremely pleased and thankful for the support I received from everyone from Harwich and the surrounding area, who attended the show, and I'm extremely proud to be from Harwich."

Wheatley thanked his sponsors, Dovercourt DIY, Concord Properties, Shakers Bar and new sponsor Selecta Cars.

"I'd also like to offer my congratulations to the members of Harwich Boxing Club, who competed at the Eindhoven Cup in Holland last weekend," he said.

"They brought home two gold medals, two silvers and a bronze against tough international competition."
