HARWICH and Dovercourt Cricket Club are hoping for a promotion party this weekend – their second in as many seasons.

The Low Road club can seal top spot in North Essex League division three, if they win their double-header of matches against Purleigh.

They are playing two Twenty20 games and success in both will give them an unassailable lead, seeing off chasing pack Chappel and Wakes Colne and Ardleigh.

Depending on results elsewhere, just one victory may even be sufficient.

Proud skipper Dom Gueizelar, who was also at the helm for last season’s title success, said promotion would be a “huge achievement”.

“We came up with Clacton last season and they were tipped as one of the favourites to do well again this year, despite us winning the title,” he said.

“Most people expected it to be a step too far for us, so to even be challenging at the top end of the table is a great effort.

“To get promoted again would be a huge achievement.

“Last season we won division five, only losing one game all year (the previous campaign the club had lost 13).

“But we’ve just got stronger and stronger as a unit and again, to date, have only lost one game.

“We have three or four lads from Surya (the international food company based in Europa Way) who have been great for the team and club.

“They love the game and have been one of the main reasons we’ve been so successful in the last two years.”
