HARWICH Angling Club held the first in a series of 11 midweek evening matches on Bradfield Lake.

This very popular and well-supported three-hour sprint, silver fish only match was held on the field side and car park bank sections.

Although it was a chilly, cloudy, dull and windy day, with frequent showers, the lake was looking in good condition, having some colour and just overflowing down the overflow pipe in peg 12.

After recent reports showing very good catches, everyone was expecting reasonable nets.

Right from the start, everyone was getting good signs from their pegs and soon bringing fish into their nets.

At the final whistle, it was last season’s champion, John Pettitt, who continued his good form of last season.

Fishing using the pole from the car park bank peg 12, he chose to float fish just off the bottom with mainly sweetcorn as bait.

He came out on top with a winning weight of 6lbs 14ozs of good quality skimmers, roach and rudd.

Closely following in second place was much-improved junior member Rosie Mortimer, on field side peg one.

Using the whip rigged up to float fish, with a single red maggot for bait close in the margins, he weighed in with 5lbs 5ozs of roach, roach/bream hybrids and small perch.

Marc Snelling also float fished but chose to use the rod with maggots as bait.

He took third place, with 4lbs 9ozs of roach and skimmers.

With all the anglers putting fish into their nets, the lake is still continuing to give up good catches.
