A MANNINGTREE theatre is showing a classic and “enduring dark thriller” next month.
Gaslight, written in 1938 by author and playwright Patrick Hamilton, will be performed at the Manifest Theatre from Tuesday May 21 to Saturday May 25.
The play is well known due to its British 1940 adaptation and American 1944 film adaption the latter of which starring Ingrid Bergman, Charles Boyer and Angela Lansbury and being nominated for Best picture.
The film and novel’s dark plot led to popular psychology using the term ‘gaslighting’ defined as verb to mean the 'deception of one's memory, perception of reality, or mental stability'.
Manifest’s version is directed by Will Parrick and again follows the story of Bella and her sadistic husband Jack.
Manifest theatre said that as the play is set in Victorian England, that their “beautiful Victorian theatre” would further be a great place to visit.
Tickets cost £10 for members and £12 for non-members with the play starting at 7.30pm each night and as of writing, only a few tickets remain for the Saturday performance.
The Manifest Theatre Group also won a Best Award in Drama this month for their production of Calendar girls by NODA – a British trade union for amateur theatres and individuals.
