A BUSY road has been branded an overgrown and dangerous jungle by a dismayed parish councillor.

A stretch of land in Ramsey Road, on the border of Dovercourt and Ramsey, is so overgrown that the village welcome sign is almost completely covered and a junction close to Two Village Primary School partially obscured.

Ramsey and Parkeston councillor David Smith is livid Essex Highways have not take action to cut the hedgerow back.

He said: “As a council, we are furious that no-one has cut down this jungle.

“It is the first thing people see when leaving Dovercourt and entering Ramsey and it is a complete eyesore.

“Not only does it look awful, it is also dangerous as it obscures the exit from the busy Mayes Lane, which is used by parents taking their children to the nearby school.”

Mr Smith said the area was included in the Essex Highways cutting rota in the past, but nothing has been done for some time.

“Our county councillor has tried without success and we have complained many times. We as a parish council, do not want villagers to think we are doing nothing,” he said.

An Essex Highways spokesman said it is usually responsible for cutting grass verges in rural areas twice a year.

They added: “Cutting the grass of highway verges is undertaken to ensure the safety of road users and takes place during the late spring and summer months.

“We have noted the concerns raised about the verge approaching Ramsey and have scheduled an inspector to investigate and take any necessary action as required.

“Anyone who notices a problem with overgrown vegetation can report it online via our website or by calling 0845 603 7631.”
