BORDER Agency officials are working to ensure the migrant crisis does not shift from Calais to Harwich International Port.

Last week Home Secretary Theresa May visited the French port town and admitted she was aware preventative measures in Calais could lead to people attempting to get into the UK via other ports, including the Hook of Holland, which has a well established link with Harwich.

She said: “We are also looking at the security of other ports. We are well aware of the possibility of displacement.”

A spokesman for the Home Office said they were working with authorities across Europe to ensure entry points remain secure. He said: “We are not complacent about the risk of clandestine migrant activity displacing to other ports away from the Calais area.

“The UK government works with the French authorities and other international partners to share intelligence to monitor movement of migrants and the tactics of the people smuggling gangs.

“The Immigration Minister is in regular contact with his Dutch and Belgian opposite numbers on the issue and joint programmes of work are under way with both countries.”
