RESIDENTS were forced to leave their homes after a deactivated wartime grenade was found in a block of flats.
Police cordoned off Cliff Road, Dovercourt, for more than two hours after the explosive was discovered at 11am on Tuesday.
Cars and pedestrians were banned from going within 100 metres of the Cliff Court flats, where the device was found, and the block, containing 20 people, was evacuated.
Essex Police said officers were already at the property on an unrelated matter when the grenade was spotted.
A spokesman said: “It was determined to be a deactivated wartime grenade and was taken away by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal officers.”
